Beeac Township

While many small country towns in Victoria have dwindled in recent years Beeac has survived due to the community spirit of the local people who are determined to hold on to the towns heritage. Beeac's prosperity was featured on the ABC 7.30 Report with its revitalised main street and reopening of the local police station. Lake Beeac a salt lake is one of many lakes to the north of the Princess Hwy between Colac and Lake Corangamite - 'Lakes and Crater country'. Lake Beeac contains a large number of brine shrimps to feed the resident Banded Stilt and Red-Necked Avocets. The Colac Otway region is the home and breeding grounds for many native bird species.

Beeac main street from the north Lake Beeac has public picnic tables, tap water and toilet facilities making it an ideal stop for a picnic en route or a day trip if you are staying in the region. The wide main street is typical of older country towns and many of the original shop fronts remain. Some dating back to the 1860's have had a fresh coat of paint and repairs when more than 8000 volunteer hours were spent restoring the main street back to its former glory. Irrewarra-Beeac FNC use the well-equipped community hall and sports oval next to the local golf course on the edge of town.
Unlike big cities out west you can see the stars on most nights through the clear un-poluted skies. The sun setting to the west glistens over the lakes smooth surface from a vibrant red skyline above the horizon in the distance. From here you can travel country roads to circumnavigate the lakes in a loop back through Warrion and Cororooke. Along the way you will see the remnants of the old dairy and pastoral properties and you can follow the Volcanic Discovery Trail or Lake Corangamites eastern shore. Red Rock Victoria's "youngest volcano" located on the way to Lake Corangamite is responsible for the volcanic rock in the region. It is still monitored by Melbourne University for any activity that could be a threat. The lookout at Red Rock offers uninterrupted 360 degree views.
