Townships of the Otway Ranges
Kawarren situated between Barongarook & Gellibrand has a parking area and amenities at the bottom of
the hill near the turn off to the primary school. This pretty spot set among tall trees is only about 15
minutes south of Colac next to Loves Creek. The mix of farming, alternate lifestyle and holiday property
owners travel to Colac or Gellibrand for food and services. The region has a variety of cleared land that
adjoins the native forest, much of the forest is national park and wildlife reserve. Hills rise steeply
from the valleys of the Gellibrand river and its tributaries. Eagles & other birds of prey frequent
the area in summer and many other colourful native species.
Kawarren is the aboriginal word for Echidna one of the native species found in abundance in the area
that is on the old Beechy Line. You can travel easily to the coast and the Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay
or the 12 Apostles, and visit the volcanic lakes and craters region to the west of Colac to Camperdown.
Many local dirt roads are closed during the wet season while others become inaccessible, in dry
conditions you can travel to most Otways towns from Kawarren & Gellibrand on some spectacular
scenic routes deep in the forest.
